Creating widgets to build traffic, links and authority

By CleverSage | February 24, 2008

Creating or building widgets or gadgets are great ways to increase your site’s traffic, build links and create authority.  Building website applications that assist website owners with solving problems or enhances their site, is a great viral marketing tactic to employ.

What problem does your widget solve?

The first step in creating widgets is determining what problem(s) you are trying to solve or information that you are trying provide.  The goal of your widget is to make it easier to find, display and integrate information on websites and the widget you create should be in line with the topic of your website.  Yahoo! Finance offers widgets for stock quotes and stock charts, while Weather.com has created widgets that display weather-related information.

Easy to integrate

When building your widget, you need to present your information so it is easy to understand and easy-to-use.  Make your code easy to copy and paste in your site.  Any obstacles or problems that people encounter while trying to implement your widget will only cause frustration and negative feedback.

Promotion is key

Once your widget is built, unless you promote it, all of your hard work has been for naught if no one knows about it.  You need to actively and agressively market your application.  Once people start using and integrating your widget on their sites, there is a snowball effect that occurs.
