What is Exit Rate?
By CleverSage | January 26, 2008
The exit rate for a page tells you how many people left on the page compared to the number of pages they visited on your website.
Tells you the percentage of visitors leaving your site immediately after viewing that page. For example, if a page received 100 pageviews and 20 of them were the last pageviews on your site, the % Exit would be 20%. A high % Exit may indicate that something about the page turns your visitors off or it could simply mean that visitors are leaving after concluding their business on your site. - Source: Google AdWords Learning Center

Generally you should strive to have the lowest exit rates possible. However, pages at the end of a conversion (i.e. successful payment, clicked on an ad, etc.) will tend to have higher exit rates.
High Exit Rates
If you notice that your exit rates are higher on certain pages of your site, you should look into the factors that are causing that exit rate to be so high:
- The image on the page could be too large
- Your visitor was expecting different information
- The page can have some type of code or technical problem
Note: If you have high exit rates on a conversion page, that is not necessarily a bad thing.
